Do I need a developer to use AI in my business?
Short answer: not to start. Longer answer: it depends on which of three levels you're playing at — and knowing the level saves you money in both directions.
This question usually hides a fear: "is this whole AI thing just not for businesses like mine?" It is. But the answer has three levels, and knowing which level your need lives at prevents both overpaying and underbuilding.
Level 1: No developer, no setup — just use AI
Drafting emails, summarising documents, brainstorming, research: a good AI assistant handles these today, for the price of a subscription, with zero technical work. If you're not here yet, start here this week — it's free capability lying on the table. The limitation: you are still the workflow. You paste things in, you copy things out, every time.
Level 2: No-code automation — you as the builder
Zapier, Make and friends let you wire triggers to actions yourself: form fill → CRM entry → welcome email. Adding AI steps (summarise this, draft that) covers real ground. What it demands isn't coding — it's the willingness to build, test and babysit the setup, and to be the person who debugs it when it silently stops. Some owners love this. Be honest about whether you're one.
Level 3: Someone builds and runs it for you
The line where this starts paying is sharp: when the workflow touches customers or money, when a silent failure would cost you, or when the task needs judgement (reading context, deciding priority, writing in your voice with escalation rules). At that point you're not buying "coding" — you're buying reliability engineering: monitoring, error handling, logging, guardrails. That's what an agency or a serious in-house build provides, and why it costs what it costs.
The practical path
Do level 1 now. Try level 2 on something harmless if it appeals. And when a workflow matters enough that you'd fire an employee for doing it sloppily — that's the bar for level 3. Working with us needs exactly one skill: describing the task in plain language.
